SURGERY OF THE PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM – A MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH, by the editor Professor Lukas Rasulić, a joint publishing endeavor of the Faculty of Medicine of the Belgrade University, the Public Enterprise Zavod za udžbenike, and the Serbian Neurosurgical Society, is a publication of monumental significance and exceptional value in the field of medical science.

With its decision, 04 No. 39 –128 /40-15, adopted on November 18, 2020 by the Council for Specialist Education, the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Belgrade recognized the monumental significance of this manuscript, accepted the positive review for this book and approved its use in graduate medical education.

The book SURGERY OF THE PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM – A MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH represents the first comprehensive publication dealing with the surgery of the peripheral nervous system through a transdisciplinary approach. It is the result of the long-lasting joint effort of 55 individuals who dedicated their professional career to the different aspects of this subject area.

The concept of the book is a combination of a classical textbook and a modern subject-based handbook, while the authors of the chapters are the most eminent experts in the individual segments of this subject area in Serbia. The book offers a comprehensive insight into the current knowledge on all the problems of peripheral nervous system pathology with a special focus on practical insights into diagnostics and therapy. The book has a total of 630 pages (5 segments with 33 chapters on 586 pages), 313 pictures (all of which are intraoperative photographs made during operations performed by the editor and authors of the chapters), 55 tables and three graphs. It is intended for surgeons actively involved in this field, as well as other experts in different specialties, such as neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, vascular surgeons, plastic surgeons, physiatrists, neurologists, radiologists, neurophysiologists, and all other doctors involved in diagnosing and treating patients with injuries and diseases of the peripheral nerves.

Surgery of the peripheral nervous system represents one of the areas of medicine which finds itself in “no man’s land”, in between other, well defined areas, which is why it often remains almost unnoticed, due to the belief that it is in the domain of the expertise of others. The importance of this book is reflected in the fact that no other book before it had presented this field by taking into consideration all the necessary aspects, while at the same time more than 40% of the population suffer from different types of peripheral nervous system pathology. The Republic of Serbia has one of the most eminent international experts in the field. Professor Lukas Rasulić, PhD has earned the recognition of the international neurosurgery community due to his contribution to the scientific and professional development of this field. He is currently the Chair of the Board for Peripheral Nervous System Surgery within the two largest neurosurgical associations in the world – European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS) and the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS). With his efforts, expertise and authority, Professor Lukas Rasulić has managed to bring together, not just his colleagues – neurosurgeons, but also the most eminent experts from other fields of medicine – neurologists, physiatrists, plastic surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, vascular surgeons, radiologists, pediatricians, physiologists, and anesthesiologists, who have, in this book, demonstrated the significance of the application of the multidisciplinary approach in treating injuries and diseases of the peripheral nervous system.

This book provides readers with a contemporary and comprehensive approach to the surgery of the peripheral nervous system, offering the insights necessary to all who are, in their everyday practice, interested in treating patients with injuries or diseases of the peripheral nervous system. It can be used as a handbook to be consulted by experienced specialists, but it can also provide necessary guidelines for doctors who are about to decide which specialty to pursue and who intend to dedicate their professional development and the rest of their career to this particular medical field.

QUOTES FROM THE REVIEWS FOR THIS BOOK

I had the pleasure of reviewing the monograph, whose editor is Professor Lukas Rasulić - SURGERY OF THE PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM – A MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH. There are fields of medicine which have the misfortune of being in “no man’s land”, alongside other, well defined areas (in this case alongside neurosurgery, neurology, orthopedic surgery, traumatology, rheumatology, etc.), and may, therefore, remain unnoticed due to the belief that they are in the domain of the expertise of others. And at the same time, at least 40% of the population suffer from diseases of the peripheral nervous system. A multidisciplinary approach was applied in the text that I received for review, as the editor brought together 55 authors from different medical fields. The textbook scope of the of the manuscript deserves praise, as the entirety of the problem area has been dealt with on 568 pages, whereby the subject matter has been systematically organized within 5 segments, which include 33 chapters. The text is very understandable and easy to read, and it is accompanied by 313 pictures, 55 tables and 3 graphs.

This is a unique text, not just in Serbia, but also in the wider medical community, and what remains for me is to congratulate the authors on an ambitious endeavor which they have completed very successfully.

This manuscript is a comprehensive publication on the surgery of the peripheral nervous system. The publication is organized in chapters and subchapters which elaborate on the the overall development of peripheral nervous surgery, the morphology and physiology, diagnostics methods, and then move on to present the surgical methods applied in individual syndromes, injuries and diseases. It is significant that the book encompasses injuries of the peripheral nervous system correlated with vascular and musculo-skeletal injuries, as well as the methods of functional reconstruction applied in irreparable lesions of the peripheral nervous system. In this publication, attention is given to rehabilitation, supplementary methods and the quality of life in patients with diseases and injuries of the peripheral nervous system.

The organization of the chapters, the presentation concept of the individual theme-related chapters, the integration of the latest insights into a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnostics, treatment and rehabilitation of a heterogenous area of diseases and injuries related to the peripheral nervous system, as well as the esthetic and visual elements of the book, recommend it to the reader in more ways than one.

The authors have undertaken and successfully completed a rare feat, and that is to try and present all the basic information on the injuries and diseases of the peripheral nervous system, in one place and in a completely understandable manner. Owing to its contemporary approach to this field of medicine, this book can be very useful to all interested readers who want to broaden and enrich their knowledge related to the surgery of the peripheral nervous system.

This book was written by the leading experts in the country who deal with injuries and diseases of the peripheral nervous system, but also by a number of young promising doctors, who have proven their ability to approach this topic in a professional manner, demonstrating their expertise. A great body of experience and knowledge, as well as many mysteries and challenges that the authors face in their everyday work are presented in this book.

Based on the reasons stated above, it is my opinion that this book is especially valuable, not only to experienced specialists, but also to doctors who are about to decide which specialty to pursue and who may choose this area as the field of their further professional development.
